Mist Fountains create that extra dimension
Mist fountains create their magic by using flowing mist instead of spouting water. Apart from the mystic effect (pun intended) this allows the cascade to continue outside the physical boundaries of the fountain bowl but without the wetting* consequences that would occur with water. The meditative effect is enhanced by colored lights which often accompany the mister (fogger) unit.
The mister unit that manufactures these wondrous affects for your pond or fountain uses high-tech wizardry. A small ceramic disc is subjected to ultrasonic sound which causes it to resonate below the water surface. These tiny vibrations result in mist (water vapor)from ionization.
You can buy these fogger units by themselves and install them in any vessel as long as they are submerged under water and you have an electricity supply to the accompanying transformer. However they are often sold as a complete mist fountain system including alternating colored lights. You can even buy a remote control to change the color from the couch, massage table or bed!
Some other things you might like to know:
- No dry ice, no chemicals, no heat needed
- No water pump required
- The mist can condense on nearby surfaces and the mist unit sends up small jets of water while in operation, so place appropriately to avoid water spillage or condensation that may cause damage to furniture, electronic goods or floors.
- The mister must be submerged when the power is on. Units are often equipped with a safety cutout.
- The ceramic disk will lose its efficiency over time as minerals and other impurities in the water collect on its surface. The disk can usually by cleaned with soft cloth or replaced with a new disk which can be bought for under $10. Use clean water. If you add a fragrant oil only add one drop at a time to minimize build up.
- Because water is being vaporized you will need to occasionally top up the water level to ensure the mister is always submerged during operation.
- You can plug a timer into the transformer to limit the operation should you forget to switch it off
Complete indoor mist fountains including lights are available online from $50 to $200 in an ever increasing range of designs. The mister units can be purchased for as low as $25 for a basic unit up to $170 for the 9 jet model with rotating colored lights capable of creating fog for a radius of five feet.
