Guide to Garden Ponds
Garden ponds are the heart of most water gardens. You can add one to your garden in a day or so by using a preformed, fiberglass or plastic shell. If you have limited space you can install a
garden pond in a container
quite quickly. These also have the advantage of being relatively portable if you decide to move or redesign your garden. This can be as simple as a tub on your deck. Smaller ponds can also be purchased as a
pond kit
with all the necessary components for a quick install. Perhaps the best way to introduce water to your garden is by means of a waterfall that tumbles into a reflecting pool filled with goldfish. It is not necessary to have an existing source of water for pools, waterfalls and streams. Many fine water gardens are fed by a
pump
that recirculates a constant flow of water through them, regardless of natural springs or natural rainfall. Even if you live in the desert you can have your own oasis - water and greenery. Popular garden pond styles include combinations of lily ponds,
rock ponds
and
fish ponds.
Quite often a
garden fountain
is introduced to add another dimension to your water garden. Take a look at some
water feature examples.
Size and Depth. The size of your pond is important. The smaller your pond the greater the impact of seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations, and the less stable the overall pond environment will be. The maximum depth of your pond should range from 18-24 inches (45-60 cm). Usually depths over 3 feet (1 m) are not necessary and could cause maintenance problems. Some areas call for fencing of bodies of water over a certain depth. Materials. If you decide to use a
preformed pond
then the shell will probably be the most expensive component of your pond. Similarly for non preformed ponds the flexible liner will be the most expensive.
Some popular examples of liners and their life expectancy are:
- PVC (pond grade): 5-15 years
- Butyl or rubber (pond grade): 30 years
- Fiberglass: 50 years or more
- Concrete: 50 years or more if properly constructed
