A simple way to introduce the sound of splashing water to a garden - especially a courtyard, where sound can echo from nearby walls - is to use a wall-mounted fountain.

Popular designs available from garden centers include lion, Medusa and dolphin heads with matching bowls to catch the water. There are styles to match classical, religious, mythical, animal and historical themes.

Many wall-mounted fountains are cast in a fiber resin compound, which makes them both light weight and durable. A small silent pump set in the base of the bowl can recirculate the water.
